If you are a parent of a child 0-5 years old or have an interest or work with small chilfren there will be a Communities for Children meeting you might like to attend on Friday 24th February at the Denmark Recreation Centre starting at 9:30 am.The focus is on supporting families with children aged 0-5 years in four priority areas:
1. Healthy young families
2. Early learning and development
3. Creating child-friendly communities
4. Supporting families and parenting.

I urge you all to spread the word about this as the Communities for Children Initiative in our region could offer some important opportunities to extend and improve the health and well being of our youngsters, in which you should have a say!

The Denmark Healthy Community Project aims to help build community cohesion by strengthening community capacity to promote health and to identify and address issues that might negatively affect health and wellbeing. You are invited to check in here every so often to get updates on the Project.

The New Healthy Community Project Committee consists of:

Sue Roberts (Director of Nursing Denmark Health Service, (DHS), Katie Baxter (HACC Coordinator, DHS), Melinda Lyons (Greenskills), Carol Powley (Shire Councillor), Hazel Moon (Community Collective), Iain Marshall (Youth House Coordinator), Jodie Hickey (Recreation Centre Manager), Anthony Bourne (Palmerston), Peter Robertson (Roy Weston - Principal Robertson Real Estate and business representative), Karen Urquart (Anglican Minister), Ron Daniels (Denmark Police), Miranda Weaver (Mental Health) and Gill Sellar (Healthy Community Project Coordinator)

These folks represent a wide cross section of our community and are committed to the Healthy Community Project as a “whole of community” approach to building social capital and empowering our community in identifying and addressing issues that are seen locally to influence health and wellbeing. Some of these issues are mental illness, domestic violence, drug and alcohol issues, unemployment, loneliness and disengagement of youth and seniors, transportation and housing.

The Healthy Community Project Officer’s role is to listen to and consult with members of the community to establish not only what the issues are, but what can be done to address some of the problems which lead to ‘dis-ease’ and ‘ill-being’ in our community.
