Community Forum II - 21 September 2008 @ Denmark Recreation Centre - Connectivity August 5, 2008

Posted by gill in : Uncategorized , add a comment

The second Community Forum to which all local community, sporting and recreational groups will be invited to participate, is planned for Sunday 21 September 2008 between 1:30pm - 4;30pm at the Denmark Recreation Centre’s Function room. A sumptuous afternon tea will be served as participants share ideas and take part in some community mapping and connectivity exercises, whilst acquiring some skills and support in progressing their own specific volunteer organisations.

This Forum follows the successful initial one held in June 2007, where a group of over 40 people workshopped their visions and aspirations of what they wanted for the future of our community and how we might progress these ideas into action.

Since that event many things have happened to improve community engagement and this second Forum will not only include a broader spectrum of local volunteers and community group representatives, but celebrate the outcomes and achievements of our Denmark Healthy Community Project as it culminates this year.

More information will be posted soon and in the interim Josephine Lebbing josephine {at} hq.org(.)au and Dawn Atkin dawnatkin {at} westnet.com(.)au can be contacted if you have any suggestion or queries about the event. Great Southern Mental Health First Aid Partnership

Does your work involve contact with people, do you have someone close to you who is affected by a mental health issue, or as a community member would you like to further your first aid skills?

In 2007 the Rural Community Support Service in partnership with the Great Southern GP Network, Great Southern Population Health, Southern Agcare Inc, headspace Great Southern and Men’s Resource Centre have been given the opportunity to the Mental Health First Aid course (already being run privately) in the Great Southern region.

Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.

The Mental Health First Aid course is a 12 hour course usually ran over 2 days. It is designed to give all participants whether you are a service provider or community member some basic skills to support a person who you think may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

Based on the same idea as a First Aid course it breaks down the stigma and gives positive step-by-step tools that can be used in early intervention of a mental health problem as well as dealing with mental health crises. It does not qualify the participant as a counsellor but rather promotes first aid, giving practical skills until professional help is sought.

Its rigorous evaluation of its effectiveness sets it apart from other educational approaches, and it is this research that has resulted in a recommendation that the Mental Health First Aid training become a prerequisite for practice in certain occupations which involve increased contact with people having mental health problems, such as teachers and the police.

To be run in Denmark 12th and 13th of June 2008

Please note a training schedule from July to December will be released in May 2008.
Course Costs
Community Members - $50
Health Dept employees - $50
Other Government Departments / Non-Profit organisations / Charities - $75
Private Organisations - $120

So, if you would like to obtain further details on the courses above or register your interest in Mental Health First Aid please call Susie Wiese, Project Officer, on (08) 9881 0700, or email: susie.wiese {at} health.wa.gov(.)au. All trial, evaluation and more in-dept course content information are available on the Mental Health First Aid website: www.mhfa.com.au.

Sharing progress to date and ideas/actions for the future the group demonstrated a solid commitment to progressing the HCP further into the community and deciding on some promotional; events and materials inviting others to become involved in what has become a foundational, community building exercise for the Denmark community at large.

Each group is following the action plan specifics for this year, which will evolve into the Denmark Community Resource Network and Hub, once the project phase concludes this year.

The Denmark Community Hub is coming to Denmark

Since the very successful community forum held on 8th June 2007, the Community Resource Network voluntary Steering Committee members have invested many hours in establishing a sound foundation.

The Community Resource Network is now ready to open The Denmark Community Hub in a centrally located in Denmark. Our Mission is, ‘to promote community well-being by connecting people and providing access to information and resources’.

Our long term vision is that The Denmark Hub will be a vibrant community gathering place where all people and groups feel supported to connect with each other and share skills, knowledge and resources that assist them to meet their needs and achieve their aspirations.

A Community Groups Database is now available in hard copy at the Library and the Visitors Centre and an online version will be available in April. If you would like your Group to be added to the Database, please return questionnaires or contact Rosemary Girvin on 9848 2497 for further information.

We now seeking dedicated, experienced people willing to expend the occasional few hours needed to be advisors to the voluntary Community Resource Network Steering Committee, to guide them in establishing the fledgling operation of the Denmark Community Hub and its Projects. It is envisaged that between them, the advisors will have knowledge of business administration including insurance matters, financial and human resource management.

Information outlining the vision, aims and priorities of the Community Resource Network for 2008 and 2009 is available and should answer most questions of those interested in being advisors. Terms of Reference for the advisors will be negotiated.

If you feel you or your business could offer the benefit of your expertise on a voluntary basis, please contact Josephine Lebbing on 9848 3143 mobile 0438045853 , and we will be pleased to send you information and/or discuss it with you personally.
